The first Monday in June, the Juneteenth Nation will be raising the authorized Juneteenth flag nationwide. Throughout the month, there will be events in commemoration and celebration of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth occurs on Father’s Day in 2022. This year’s national theme will be recognition of the Founding Fathers of Freedom, the United States Colored Troops (USCT) who proudly marched into Galveston Texas in their military uniforms, gold buttons shining in the sun, announcing freedom to those still held enslaved. Their message resulted in General Order #3 being written and posted on the door of Reedy Chapel.
The National Juneteenth Observance Foundation has issued a Call to Action. They are asking churches, mosques, and synagogues across the country to post 11×17 copies of General Order #3 on their doors on June 19th in recognition of June 19, 1865, NJOF is asking that churches return to their place in history as the foundation of the community. In 1865, the minister was one of the only persons with the ability to read the order and confirm to the formerly enslaved that the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed 2 ½ years earlier, granting their freedom.
The Washington D.C. highlight will be a parade on Monday June 20th . honoring the USCT with reenactors invited from across the country. The parade will also recognize the Buffalo soldiers, military veterans, and others.
