Juneteenth: Freedom At Last
Slavery persisted in the South even after the Emancipation Proclamation and the passage of the 13th Amendment. In the most remote corners of the Confederacy, news of slavery’s end did not come until more than two months after Robert E. Lee’s surrender in April 1865. The day that General Order No. 3 was delivered to the people of Galveston, Texas, is the day slavery finally ended everywhere.
